Closet Visit with Anna Margaret

January 10, 2016

Anna is the owner of Le Souk Le Souk, a market-style boutique on NW 23rd in Portland, OR full of travel-inspired fashion, jewelry and homewares. She’s not only my boss but my dear friend and I can say that she is, without a doubt, the best-dressed person I know. From the moment I met her, I was in total of awe of her style. She is a true taste-maker, embracing all things rare and beautiful. And in a time when minimalist fashion is being revered, she boldly goes after the unique and the other-worldly. I’ve been wanting to photograph Anna and her one-of-a-kind style for awhile now, so we decided one misty morning at her gorgeous new A-frame home to play in her closet, shoot together and talk about fashion.

Describe your personal style:
I’d say it’s boho 70’s meets modern edge. I am a textile/art collector so each item in my closet feels like a collected piece of art. I gravitate towards textures and colors that portray an emotion or nostalgia. I love free-flowy colorful patterns for summer and then as the cooler months approach I turn toward harder heavier more structured pieces

Who are your favorite designers/makers?
I recently bought a pair of Pedro Garcia boots, and also have two pairs of his heels- super lovely.
I’m always in awe of what Dries Van Noten does, each season he manages to create such a strong yet uniquely feminine collection. Marni can do no wrong and Chloe rocks my boho loving soul. Of course my daily wardrobe is full of Ace & Jig and Ulla Johnson, two of my favs that I stock at my shop.

Who or what inspires your style?
Travel. I am truly obsessed with textiles and love to learn about the way people around the globe dress. I am inspired by their ancient arts of weaving and dying and also by the way they use their hands and natural resources to create such beauty.

What’s the best piece you scored for an amazing deal?
This question is hard for me because I generally wait and find deals on everything…I found a quilted vintage Dior bathrobe at Goodwill once for $12!

What is your philosophy on your unique style?
I never choose my outfit the night before, I think it’s important to dress according to your mood at that moment. While many believe in saving up for those strong core pieces I tend to save for those crazy unique, stand-out pieces that give me the butterflies each time I catch a glimpse of them in my closet- it’s those special pieces that I then pair with the affordable, simple, less-statement items.

What pieces are your most prized possessions?
I have a few dresses from Guatemala that my mom used to wear in the 70’s, they are amazing! Also textiles collected on my travels, I have countless pillows, throws, rugs and quilts that I’ve found in Thailand, Mexico, Bangladesh and Guatemala- so dreamy! And my grandmother’s vintage, beaded purse collection.

You recently moved into a beautiful A-frame, tell me what is your favorite thing about your new home?
When I first saw the real estate listing I knew it was my Spirit House! Ha, I had to have it!
It was in pretty bad shape but now that we’ve scrubbed, painted and done a bit of remodeling it’s truly a dream. The architecture is divine, windows and angles galore. It’s also nestled on a quiet dead end in the “neighborwoods” so it’s super peaceful and quiet. I love being home and rarely want to leave when I have a day off!

What does a typical day look like for you?
6:55am alarm sounds, crawl out of bed, start making breakfast and school lunches…get the babies off to school without any major fashion freak-outs or dog-ate-my-homework incidences.
8:45am back home, enjoy coffee (and maybe a pastry or bagel) with my other half, Srijon, in our living room full of windows.
9:20am out the door heading to work at my shop, Le Souk Le Souk. Possibly it’s a day that feels like Christmas, full of new apparel orders to open and steam and play dress up.
3pm pick up kiddos head home to tidy house, reply to emails, prep dinner…
7pm no dinner ideas so we call our local favorite, Pizza Baron…enjoy family dinner time.
9pm kids tucked in
9:30pm grown up time (South Park episode if he’s lucky!), reading, netflix etc…
11pm sweet dreams

Which beauty products do you swear by?
Skin Trip coconut lotion, Josie Maran’s Argan Oil, Kat Von Dee’s red lipstick, Coconut oil for removing eye makeup, Evan Healy’s Rose Cleansing Milk

5 things you can’t live without:
Coffee w/ Silk almond milk creamer, my Mou (basically fancy Uggs) boots to wear around the house, Burt’s Bees mint chapstick, Olive & Pineapple Pizza, my kiddo’s smiles.

Tori, your new blog is wonderful! This sneak peek into the life and closet of my dear sister is pitch perfect–beautiful photos (though it is pretty hard to take a bad picture of Anna or the A-frame 😊) and I learned new things about a woman I already admire! xo, Mona
